IMPOSSIBLE CROSSINGS

Juan Castrillón and Matt Engle

Impossible Crossings features a sound sculpture of glass bells with live electronics accompanied by Matt Engle in the acoustic bass and Juan Castrillón in the ney flute and spoken word. The idea of the sculpture emerged as a collaboration with glass blower artists Mete Bakhtiar and Tekin Can Göntürk in North Cyprus, 2024, and became a piece of permanent readjustment as more international musicians began interacting with it. Matt and Juan bring together their own musical idioms to wander around themes of longing, and the inevitable transformation of past and present. This outdoor sonic sculpture draws on the noisy and poetic imagery of cage-free sheep and goats transgressing the militarized divide that has altered the geographic imagination and everyday life of Cypriots since mid 1970s.
