Moondog Conference and Rhythm Workshop signup
Presented by Julian CalvFriday, June 5th
Join us for an immersive exploration of the life and music of Moondog, led by percussionist and scholar Julian Calv.
Julian Calv is the sole protégé of the late Stefan Lakatos—who Moondog himself described as “the leading [and only] exponent of the Moondog method of drumming.” As a dedicated custodian of this legacy, Julian performs on the trimba, a percussion instrument designed by Moondog specifically for his unique rhythmic compositions. Following Lakatos’s passing in 2023, Julian established the collective Trimbtych. The ensemble is committed to preserving and performing traditional interpretations of Moondog’s work exactly as the composer intended.
The session begins with a historical presentation featuring:
Deep-dive discussion on the composer's history and philosophy
Curated vinyl recordings of Moondog’s original works.
Live performances by Julian Calv and Trimbtych.
Following the presentation, Julian will lead an intensive workshop focusing on the intricate rhythms of Moondog’s music.
Participants will learn a hand-drumming system refined by Calv, deeply informed by the trimba traditions of Moondog and Lakatos.
Attendees can download a workshop rhythm packet containing specialized notation below. Julian will provide direct instruction on how to interpret and perform these unique patterns.
