Jane Hargrave (she/her) is an artist and writer focused on craft, ecology, and folklore.
Raised at the edge of the woods in Central Pennsylvania, Jane has enjoyed a career spanning sustainable agriculture and product design. Her practice explores natural and built ecosystems, especially within the realms of fiber and wood.

Merging personal memory, research, and dream scenarios, Jane’s stories and installations occupy the shifting boundaries between natural and man-made worlds. Jane’s drawings and sculptures feature repeating decorative motifs*, creating intricately adorned objects that serve as artifacts of an invented history.

*The word motif comes from the Latin movere which means ‘to move.’ I have long been attracted to the repetitive use of language and mark making; they help integrate narratives across various media, and can bring both maker and observer into closer contact with meditation and the mystical. The repetitive movement of ideas through multiple formats is found in many disciplines, including music, gardening, dancing, cooking, and printmaking. I have found meditation and metaphor in all these places. I am fascinated by the instinct to collect and mimic; nature-based instincts that we act out in civilization, where our mark making and repeat actions transform routine lived experience into ritual and craft.
